Is it necessary to connect it to a grid point ?

Is it okay to use an artificial grid point ?

Since there's no mention of grid points in the original document, I'd say a grid point isn't necessary to operate this device.

This reminds me of the Pierce oscillator, except with 2 crystals, and with a person as part of the capacitor.

I find it strange that it lacks a power source, though. Also, as nearly as I can tell, they've used diodes and potentiometers to construct a NOT gate.

A transistor can be simulated using 2 diodes:

So basically, I think it's an overcomplicated circuit, and it surely needs a power source. How much, I do not know. However, the diodes are labeled as 3 amps, and that's quite a bit more than a person should apply to their body. It could be dangerous.
