Along with ridicule, I think people also don't speak out because people get stuck on what they "know" and it's hard to listen to something that isn't commonly accepted as the truth.

It can challenge beliefs and values
of both religion and science.
Go to most any clinical psychologist
and tell that you have this 'issue'.
I did when I was 14. Nothing helped.
Imagine the surprise when in my 30s, roommates begin telling of things they....'think they are seeing'....that absolutely match what you thought you witnessed as a child.
It was a bit of an Epiphany.
Not to say that there AREN'T true cases where things are addressed through the field of science and medicine and helped in the long run.
But, I digress.
I guess that's where I was (kind of)
coming from when I mentioned,
"Be careful what you tell
and to whom..."
