What I meant by "cool gadgets" is this:

In this time period people have cell phones that take pictures, portable PCs, and other electronic wizzardry we don't really NEED, but find fun to own and play with.

Also, what precautions are you taking so that you don't alter your future? Something as little as bumpiing into someone on the street could cause what's known as "The Butterfly Effect".
